UK Blames Musk Over Belfast Unrest Following Immigration-Related Violence

(MENAFN) British officials have accused Elon Musk of contributing to rising tensions after his public comments about a knife attack that sparked anti-immigrant riots in Belfast.

The unrest broke out on Tuesday night in the Northern Irish capital after a Sudanese asylum seeker was allegedly involved in a stabbing incident that left a man blind in one eye, according to reports. Following the attack, masked groups reportedly set fire to vehicles, targeted homes, and clashed with police, prompting authorities to call for calm.

A 30-year-old Sudanese man later appeared in court and was charged with attempted murder. The case has intensified ongoing political debate in Britain over immigration, particularly in connection with recent high-profile crimes involving foreign nationals.

Elon Musk, who has frequently criticized the UK government, posted shortly before the violence escalated, saying: “Only by protesting REPEATEDLY and LOUDLY will there be any change!!” He also reshared content from activist Tommy Robinson that listed multiple protest locations across the UK.

Government figures strongly condemned Musk’s comments. Labour Party Chair Anna Turley accused him of worsening the situation, stating that it was “appalling” for anyone to “drive and exploit a situation like this to drive their own political agenda,” adding that such actions caused serious harm, according to reports.

She further argued that Musk, commenting from abroad, was detached from the real consequences of the unrest on the ground in Northern Ireland.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer also criticized those involved in inciting or engaging in the violence, warning that all forms of “unacceptable” unrest—whether online or in public—would be met with legal consequences. He had previously accused Musk of trying to “whip up division” following a separate fatal stabbing case.

That earlier incident involved the death of 18-year-old Henry Nowak, who was killed in December by 23-year-old Vickrum Singh Digwa, a Sikh man who initially misled police by claiming he was the victim of a racist attack, according to reports.
