Starmer Reshapes Labour Team After Severe Setbacks in UK Local Elections
(MENAFN) British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has initiated a reshuffle of his leadership team following significant electoral losses suffered by the Labour Party across multiple parts of the United Kingdom, according to reports.
The changes come in response to poor results in local elections in England as well as votes in Scotland and Wales, where Labour lost ground to rival parties and saw its political standing weakened.
As part of the reshuffle, former Prime Minister Gordon Brown was appointed as a special envoy on global finance, while former deputy Labour leader Harriet Harman was named adviser on women and girls. Downing Street described the adjustments as part of an effort to accelerate policy delivery and “deliver change faster,” according to reports.
The election results showed a sharp shift in voter support. In England, with most council seats declared, Reform UK emerged as the dominant force in terms of gains, winning more than 1,400 seats, while Labour secured just under 1,000. The Conservatives also experienced substantial losses.
In Wales, Reform UK made major gains, becoming the second-largest party in the Senedd, while Plaid Cymru overtook Labour to become the largest party, ending decades of Labour dominance in Welsh politics.
In Scotland, the Scottish National Party secured another election victory, marking its fifth consecutive win, though it did not achieve an outright majority. Reform UK and Labour each secured a similar number of seats.
Senior figures within Labour acknowledged the scale of the setback. The party’s deputy leader said the results reflected public dissatisfaction and that significant improvement was necessary, noting that the outcome represented a judgment on the government’s performance.
According to reports, internal criticism has also emerged within Labour, with some senior members describing the results as a severe blow and suggesting leadership questions may arise in the future. One senior MP warned that public support for Starmer appeared to be weakening significantly following the vote.
