UK MPs Clash Over Bid to Investigate Starmer in Mandelson Row
Lord Mandelson was appointed to the post in December 2024 but was later removed in September after Downing Street said new information had surfaced concerning the extent of his past relationship with convicted US sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Leading the Conservative response, party leader Kemi Badenoch argued that it was “very obvious” the prime minister had provided Parliament with statements that were “not correct,” intensifying pressure for an official investigation.
However, MPs from Starmer’s Labour Party rejected the proposal, describing the push for an inquiry and the anticipated vote as a political “stunt.”
Stephen Flynn, who leads the Scottish National Party at Westminster, also criticized the prime minister, saying Starmer’s position should have become untenable earlier. He argued that resignation should have followed when Starmer told MPs he had been aware of Mandelson’s links to Epstein prior to the ambassadorial appointment.
“That should have been curtains for him,” Flynn said, adding that Starmer is “not fit because his judgment was flawed, and it was wrong.”
He further accused Labour MPs of previously choosing to “proactively ignore that and to defend him” during earlier stages of the controversy.
