UK Starmer Spared Parliament Probe

(MENAFN) British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will face no formal investigation over allegations that he misled Parliament concerning former British ambassador to the United States Peter Mandelson, after lawmakers decisively voted down a Conservative-led motion Tuesday.

Following more than five hours of heated parliamentary debate, Members of Parliament rejected the proposal — which sought to refer Starmer to the House of Commons Privileges Committee — by a margin of 335 to 223.

Starmer had already moved to dismiss the proceedings before the vote was cast, telling British media Monday that it was a "political stunt" by his opponents.

At the heart of the motion was whether Starmer had misled Parliament by claiming that "full due process" had been observed in Mandelson's diplomatic appointment. Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch contended that the statement constituted a deliberate attempt to mislead the legislature.

The controversy deepened in mid-April when it emerged that Mandelson had been denied security clearance in January 2025 — before assuming his ambassadorial role. British security officials had conducted a thorough vetting process, inclusive of a confidential background check, but their ruling was subsequently overturned by the UK Foreign Office.

Starmer maintained that he only became aware of the clearance issue on April 14, firmly rejecting the suggestion that his remarks to Parliament were misleading when he stated that "full due process" was followed.

Mandelson's tenure as Britain's top diplomat in Washington came to an abrupt end in September 2025, after details of his association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein became public. Earlier this year, he was briefly taken into custody as part of a probe into alleged misconduct in public office, including the potential disclosure of market-sensitive information.
