Trump Calls on UK to Retain Control of Diego Garcia Amid Iran Tensions

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump on Wednesday urged the United Kingdom not to relinquish control of Diego Garcia, cautioning that the island and a British airfield could be needed if Iran refuses to reach an agreement.

"Should Iran decide not to make a deal, it may be necessary for the United States to use Diego Garcia, and the Airfield located in Fairford, in order to eradicate a potential attack by a highly unstable and dangerous regime," Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social.

He added that any such attack could potentially target the UK and other allied nations. Trump criticized UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer for entering a lease agreement for the island, arguing that such arrangements are unsuitable for countries and represent a “big mistake.”

"Prime Minister Starmer should not lose control, for any reason, of Diego Garcia, by entering a tenuous, at best, 100 Year Lease," he said. He further claimed that Britain is ceding control of the strategically important Indian Ocean island through “claims of entities never known of before,” labeling them fictitious. "This land should not be taken away from the U.K. and, if it is allowed to be, it will be a blight on our Great Ally."

Trump stressed that the US will always be ready to support Britain militarily but warned that the UK must remain resilient "in the face of wokeism, and other problems put before them." He concluded with a clear directive: "Do not give away Diego Garcia."

White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt confirmed that the president’s post "should be taken as the policy of the" Trump administration.
