UK Starmer, Trump Hold Phone Talks on Iran, Gaza, Ukraine
During the call, Starmer renewed his condemnation of Russia's continued strikes against Ukrainian civilians, as both leaders weighed in on the fragile diplomatic push toward a durable and equitable peace settlement, according to a statement issued by the British Prime Minister's office.
The two leaders also turned their attention to the dire situation in the Gaza Strip, with Starmer underscoring the critical need to expand the flow of humanitarian assistance into the besieged enclave.
Israel launched its military campaign in Gaza on Oct. 8, 2023 — a conflict that has since claimed more than 72,000 lives and left over 171,000 people wounded. The war has devastated approximately 90% of civilian infrastructure, with the United Nations estimating reconstruction costs at roughly $70 billion.
London and Washington reaffirmed their shared commitment to advancing stability and lasting peace across the Middle East, the statement said.
The conversation also touched on the US-Iran nuclear negotiations currently underway in Geneva, with both leaders adopting a firm and unified stance on preventing Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons capability.
"Both agreed that Iran must never be able to develop a nuclear weapon, and they reiterated the need to work closely amongst allies and partners to improve regional security," the statement added.
