Brown Says Starmer Faces Challenges Over Lord Mandelson Controversy

(MENAFN) Former Prime Minister Gordon Brown described the situation surrounding UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer as “serious,” suggesting that the PM may have been “too slow to do the right things” regarding Lord Mandelson, according to reports.

Starmer is facing growing pressure from Labour MPs after appointing Lord Mandelson as the UK’s ambassador to the US in 2024, despite Mandelson’s publicized ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Brown said the appointment was a “mistake,” noting he himself had erred by including Lord Mandelson in his cabinet in 2008.

“Well, this is obviously serious. I mean, there's always speculation. It happened to me, it happened to Tony Blair, it happens to everybody about how their future should be gauged,” Brown said.

He also defended Starmer as a “man of integrity” who had been “betrayed” by Mandelson, adding that the prime minister was the right person to “clean up the system.”

The remarks come as police completed searches of two properties linked to Mandelson, following the release of emails in the latest Epstein files. These documents suggest that Mandelson passed market-sensitive government information to Epstein, including warning him of an EU bailout in 2010 and sharing internal UK economic data, while lobbying the Treasury on banking policy in 2009 during Brown’s cabinet.

Starmer previously said that Mandelson had lied about the scope of his Epstein ties during the vetting process for the ambassador role:
“None of us knew the depths and the darkness of that relationship.”

Labour backbenchers are increasingly questioning the PM’s judgment over the appointment.
