UK Police to Probe Alleged Misconduct Linked to Epstein Files
In a statement issued Monday, Metropolitan Police Commander Ella Marriott said authorities are aware of the latest disclosure of a large volume of legal documents linked to Epstein.
"Following this release and subsequent media reporting, the Met has received a number of reports relating to alleged misconduct in public office," she said.
Marriott explained that all submissions would be evaluated to determine whether they warrant a criminal investigation, adding, "The reports will all be reviewed to determine if they meet the criminal threshold for investigation.”
The development followed the publication of emails in the United States last week that suggested former minister Peter Mandelson shared internal government material with Epstein while serving as business secretary in 2009, according to available information.
Marriott noted that authorities remain open to acting on any additional material that may emerge. "As with any matter, if new and relevant information is brought to our attention, we will assess it and investigate as appropriate," she said.
Earlier on Monday, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Mandelson should no longer sit in the House of Lords due to his association with Epstein. Separately, a government spokesperson said Starmer had instructed the Cabinet Secretary to urgently examine all existing information concerning contacts between Mandelson and Epstein.
The most recent document release also led Mandelson to step down from the Labour Party on Sunday, according to reports.
