UK PM says US tariffs are wrong approach

(MENAFN) Britain’s prime minister has criticized Washington’s plan to impose tariffs on the United Kingdom and other allied countries, arguing that such measures undermine unity within the alliance and misuse security concerns surrounding Greenland as economic leverage.

He said the US proposal "is not the right way to resolve differences within an alliance, nor is it helpful to frame efforts to strengthen Greenland security as a justification for economic pressure."

Speaking at a press conference at 10 Downing Street, Keir Starmer dismissed the idea of retaliatory tariffs against the United States, stressing that "a trade war is in nobody's interest and my job is always to act in the UK's national interest."

Starmer highlighted the growing strategic importance of Greenland, warning that "Security of Greenland matters, and it will matter more as climate change reshapes the Arctic, as sea routes open and strategic competition intensifies."

He added that "The High North will require greater attention, greater investment, and stronger collective defense. The United States will be central to that effort, and the UK stands ready to contribute fully alongside our allies through NATO.”

The prime minister also emphasized that decisions regarding the territory’s future are not for external powers to make, stating that it “belongs to the people of Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark alone.”

His remarks follow an announcement by US President Donald Trump on Saturday that Washington plans to impose 10 percent tariffs on goods from the UK, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Finland starting February 1, with the rate set to increase to 25 percent by June 1, in response to their opposition to US control of Greenland.
