UK vows not to yield to Trump over Greenland tariffs

(MENAFN) The United Kingdom has affirmed that it will not bow to pressure from US President Donald Trump over Greenland, as he moves forward with plans to impose trade tariffs on European nations opposing his bid to gain control of the territory, according to reports.

Trump has argued that Greenland’s sovereignty is essential for US national security and that Denmark, along with other European NATO members, cannot adequately defend the island against potential Chinese or Russian influence. His position has drawn criticism across Europe, with several countries accusing Washington of undermining NATO solidarity.

“Our position on Greenland is non-negotiable. We’ve made that very clear. And we’ll continue to make that clear,” British Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said, echoing an earlier statement by Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Starmer emphasized that the island’s future “is a matter for the Greenlanders and the Danes” and described the idea of imposing tariffs on NATO allies resisting Trump’s ambitions as “completely wrong.”

Last week, a number of Western European and Nordic countries, including Germany, France, Sweden, Norway, and the UK, sent between one and 15 troops to Greenland for a Danish-led military exercise. German forces have since returned, according to official sources.

The European Union has also warned of possible countermeasures, dubbed the “trade bazooka,” in response to Trump’s planned tariffs. The proposed 10 percent US levy on imports from eight European nations is set to begin on February 1 and could rise to 25 percent by June if no agreement is reached.

Earlier this month, NATO members broadly supported the US stance on the removal of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, despite many allies not recognizing him as the country’s legitimate leader.
