UK considers response after diplomat expelled from Russia

(MENAFN) The UK government said on Thursday that it is reviewing possible responses after Russian authorities expelled a British diplomat, accusing the individual of espionage activities.

A spokesperson for the Foreign Office said London is assessing its next steps following the decision by Moscow. “This is not the first time the Kremlin has made malicious and baseless accusations against our staff,” the spokesperson said, reacting to the expulsion.

Earlier in the day, Russia’s foreign ministry announced that it had ordered a staff member of the British Embassy to leave the country, alleging links to intelligence services. The British side rejected the claim, saying such actions reflect mounting pressure rather than legitimate concerns.

“Their targeting of British diplomats comes out of desperation and actions like this undermine the basic conditions required for diplomatic missions to operate,” the spokesperson said.

The UK official added that authorities are reviewing potential countermeasures, stating, “We are carefully considering our options in response.”

According to Russian officials, the deputy head of the British diplomatic mission in Moscow was summoned to receive a formal protest related to what was described as the “affiliation of one of the diplomatic staff of the embassy with British intelligence services.”

The incident follows a pattern of reciprocal diplomatic expulsions between the two countries. In March 2025, the UK expelled a Russian diplomat in response to an earlier decision by Moscow to remove a British envoy in November 2024.
