UK weighs troop deployment to Greenland amid Trump’s security concerns
Officials close to Downing Street indicated that Starmer shares Trump’s assessment of Russia’s “growing aggression” in the High North and believes strengthening Euro Atlantic security is essential. Sources added that the prime minister views threats from both Russia and China in the region “extremely seriously.”
Other reports noted that European allies are engaged in discussions about a possible joint military presence in Greenland. Military planners are said to be drafting proposals for a NATO mission, with British officials recently meeting counterparts from Germany and France to begin preparations.
The early-stage plans could involve a range of measures, from deploying UK troops, warships, and aircraft to conducting limited exercises, sharing intelligence, building capabilities, or redirecting defense spending.
Despite these deliberations, Greenland’s political leaders reiterated their opposition to U.S. ambitions on Friday, declaring: “We do not want to be Americans, we do not want to be Danes, we want to be Greenlanders.”
